To Live At All Is Miracle Enough

“After sleeping through a hundred million centuries we have finally opened our eyes on a sumptuous planet, sparkling with color, bountiful with life. Within decades we must close our eyes again. Isn’t it a noble, an enlightened way of spending our brief time in the sun, to work at understanding the universe and how we have come to wake up in it? This is how I answer when I am asked—as I am surprisingly often—why I bother to get up in the mornings. To put it the other way round, isn’t it sad to go to your grave without ever wondering why you were born? Who, with such a thought, would not spring from bed, eager to resume discovering the world and rejoicing to be a part of it?”

The above is one of the most famous writings by science author Richard Dawkins, and even though I may disagree with parts of Richard Dawkins Foundation’s core missions, I find the above lines a very inspiring approach to life.

I continue the above with the following beautiful lines by English poet Mervyn Peake (1911 – 1968); 

“To live at all is miracle enough.
The doom of nations is another thing.
Here in my hammering blood-pulse is my proof.

Let every painter paint and poet sing
And all the sons of music ply their trade;
Machines are weaker than a beetle’s wing.

Swung out of sunlight into cosmic shade,
Come what come may the imagination’s heart
Is constellation high and can’t be weighed.

Nor greed nor fear can tear our faith apart
When every heart-beat hammers out the proof
That life itself is miracle enough.”

Before falling asleep, look ahead to make tomorrow your favourite day, no matter how hard things went today.

Author and reconstructionist Maya Angelou (from her book: Letter to My Daughter) writes:

“You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them. Try to be a rainbow in someone’s cloud. Do not complain. Make every effort to change things you do not like. If you cannot make a change, change the way you have been thinking. You might find a new solution.

Never whine. Whining lets a brute know that a victim is in the neighborhood.

Be certain that you do not die without having done something wonderful for humanity.”

What is better than an ending quoted by my favourite Anaïs Nin (from The Diary of Anaïs Nin, volume 3, 1939-1944):

 ”Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.”

On Intellectual Elegance & Love

Excerpts that inspired me by famous Italian graphic designer Massimo Vignelli in an interview with brilliant author and artist Debbie Millman. You can read the full interview in Millman’s book “How to think like a great Graphic Designer”.

On Intellectual Elegance:

“When I talk about elegance, I mean intellectual elegance.  Elegance of the mind.  I would define intellectual elegance as a mind that is continually refining itself with education and knowledge.  Intellectual elegance is the opposite of intellectual vulgarity.  We all know vulgarity very well.  Elegance is the opposite.”

On Love:

“Love is a cake that comes in layers.  The top layer is the most appealing one.  This is the one you see first.  Then you cut into it and you see many different layers.  They’re all beautiful, but some are sweeter than others.   How do I define love?  I define it as a very intense passion on the one hand, and a very steady level on the other.  The first layer, the one of passion, is the most troublesome.  God, it’s a pain.  [The] more you love, the more jealous you get.  You become jealous of everything, the air around the person, the people, a look, even the way they look at something.  Then there is the extreme pleasure of writing about love, as well.  This is fascinating to me.  The layer of correspondence — and the anxiety to receive answers.  That is great.  Finally you come to the physical layer.  The emotion of receiving and conveying pleasure is sensational. It’s unbelievable how your entire body becomes a messenger.  Your fingers, lips, eyes, smells.  Your whole body becomes involved.  Then there is the layer of suffering.  Distance, remoteness, no presence, horror.  The suffering of not seeing who you want to see, and not being with whom you love.  This is another painful aspect of love.  We are talking about pain.  All these layers define love.  I think that is why it’s so great and so extremely complex.”

On Falling in Love (Nothing good gets away)

A tender, timelessly inspiring letter by author John Steinbeck (1902 – 1968), written on the year 1958, corresponding to his son Thom, who sent confessing falling deeply in love with a girl named Susan while in boarding school. It is published in the book “A Life In Letters” by: Elaine Steinbeck and Robert Wallsten, which I would very much like to own soon.

Dear Thom,

We had your letter this morning. I will answer it from my point of view and of course Elaine will from hers.

First — if you are in love — that’s a good thing — that’s about the best thing that can happen to anyone. Don’t let anyone make it small or light to you.

Second — There are several kinds of love. One is a selfish, mean, grasping, egotistical thing which uses love for self-importance. This is the ugly and crippling kind. The other is an outpouring of everything good in you — of kindness and consideration and respect — not only the social respect of manners but the greater respect which is recognition of another person as unique and valuable. The first kind can make you sick and small and weak but the second can release in you strength, and courage and goodness and even wisdom you didn’t know you had.

You say this is not puppy love. If you feel so deeply — of course it isn’t puppy love.

But I don’t think you were asking me what you feel. You know better than anyone. What you wanted me to help you with is what to do about it — and that I can tell you.

Glory in it for one thing and be very glad and grateful for it.

The object of love is the best and most beautiful. Try to live up to it.

If you love someone — there is no possible harm in saying so — only you must remember that some people are very shy and sometimes the saying must take that shyness into consideration.

Girls have a way of knowing or feeling what you feel, but they usually like to hear it also.

It sometimes happens that what you feel is not returned for one reason or another — but that does not make your feeling less valuable and good.

Lastly, I know your feeling because I have it and I’m glad you have it.

We will be glad to meet Susan. She will be very welcome. But Elaine will make all such arrangements because that is her province and she will be very glad to. She knows about love too and maybe she can give you more help than I can.

And don’t worry about losing. If it is right, it happens — The main thing is not to hurry. Nothing good gets away.

Life is crazy and it drowns us badly into daily matters, time passes massively and we get to meet loads of people and make loads more friendships, and try a few relationships. We work and travel and grow older, more experienced and colder, that we forget a time when someone came and for the first time ever, made us sincerely float over all that. Breathtaking. The first time this feeling ever hits us could hardly ever be repeated again, the person might change, but this feeling? Lasts forever.*

The 100 Things that make me happy!

It took me almost 2 years to complete this list, it’s the real deal. Start date: December 24th, 2010!

P.S. Numbers got nothing to do with priority.

Here we go:

1- McDonald’s Strawberry Milkshake is the heavenly syrup!

2- Eel, Caviar Sushi, for more endorphins…

3- Supertramp, precisely Roger Hodgson. His voice sends my soul to the clouds. I sigh!

4- Sitting by the Sea at night. I really ‘sea’ nothing, but the sound of waves… Phew.

5- Waking up to too many notifications, text messages and missed calls (tho I’ll probably only reply to work texts, but I love you people, be there! ;)

6- A friend calling just to say ‘Hi!’, a call lasting for only 3 minutes is more than enough. I hate long calls, smart phone chats, bla bla bla…

7- Driving, with my favorite music on. LOUD.

8- After8 Mint Chocolate (the absolute dark-green classic. All the new versions ruined its taste!)

9- Can You Read My Mind (Superman’s Love Theme). Read the lyrics… #Love

10- Blogging. I write my thoughts, because I can never speak my heart out. I have to pour things somewhere before I just – BLAST – y’know…

11- Ashton Kutcher, Mark Ruffalo, Luke Wilson, Christian Bale. Can you compete with any of them? #Perfection

12- Sweet corn. Yes, that’s my answer whenever I’m asked: “You’re stuck on an island with only one type of food\Partner\Friend\Companion for the rest of your life. Choose.” It’s Sweetcorn. Easy!

13- Pina Colada. Cools ya down.

14- Helping someone, anywhere, anytime. Putting a smile on people’s face is a feeling worthwhile. Trust me on that. Stop frowning ya’ idiots!

15- Teaching. Just Science\Chemistry… It is a life time, it is passion. Something not many will understand nor relate to, but the few who know will agree.

16- Chemistry, Biochemistry. Biochemistry? That subject that used to bring down tears of happiness whenever I figure out a complete cycle on my own? When I figured out most of the exam the night before just because simply the Professor’s mind couldn’t beat out mine? Y’know what, I’m humble & all, but I’m genius in that field & I know it. So No Trespassing till I get my Nobel, please.

17- Shopping, buying new stuff whenever I feel down. Not a shopping freak tho, till I hit the mall… Ehum…

18- Book shopping. Not that I’m a book worm, but I still like to get the knowledge from books as the primary resource.

19-  Feeling that other people value me as I value them. Yes, and if you didn’t do that you’re doomed for life. Got it?

20- Paying someone back. Out of appreciation (1%), fear of not paying my debts before death makes… 99%

21-  KFC Diner Box with spicy potatoes, coleslaw and coke. Because I can.

22- New sneakers. Fancy colours.

23- Nail polish. Fancy colours. Hot pink, all shades.

24- A new haircut.

25- Sunflowers, they portrait the Sun, hence Life!

26- Planting a garden of Orange Tulips. Never done it before, but I sure one day will, & it WILL make me happy… Just too scared of one thing: I might literally spend my nights out with my flowers, catch a cold & die… Oh.

27- A sigh with relief. Butterflies. You know those funny tickles you get when you have a crush on someone? They’re cool. So damn lovingly cool!

28- Believing much that Fate works. It works.

29-  Watching the Stars on a moon-less night. I’d add: on the shoulders of the One I love, bla bla… And you know, I always end up on the shoulder of one of my best friends… Freaky.

30- Shooting Stars appearing suddenly on that night! Now I know I can make a wish, that friend’s shoulder fading away, GOD BRING HIM PLEASE… ;)

31- When a Gentleman stands up in a bus, or anywhere to let an old lady\man sit down.

32- When a guy opens the car’s door for me (everytime), YES, everytime :)

33- When a guy I have a crush on asks me for a date (who shall knock down my C.phobia!) I will give him hard time, I will make him suffer, he will still love me to death. Scorpio,, smile.

34- A baby laughing. It tickles my heart! :D

35- A kid showing off their drawing, achievement. And I make them feel they’re stars. Nothing’s worthier than a proud kid happily showing-off their talent. In the future, they become fearless of judgmental idiots, and become VERY successful.

36- Befriending a Patriot. Because they have brains, and hearts. They think. They believe. They’re fearless. And they love sincerely.

37- Shawerma Abu 3ammar Elsouri. Especially Shorbet el 3ads served beforehand.

38- Drumming. Because I’m multi-talented.

39- Getting gifts on my birthday. Yes, problem?

40- Updating my Music playlist. Everytime I can’t wait to listen to the new songs like a baby!

41- Editing pictures… Those who see can relate.

42- Watching ‘Teer Enta’ for Ahmed Mekki… Like every time I watch that amazing wacko, I go laughing like an idiot.

43- When I go Clubbing, not too much tho! It gets boring and exhausting. I say twice a year is Berfekshan!

44- My sandwich toaster. I use it to heat anything. Sorry, miss-use it…

45- Blue Cheese on roasted bread.

48- The minute I’m entering the shower after a long day at the sea!

Episode 1 – الحلقة الأولى

Egyptian Scientist Dr. Samira Moussa – العالمة المصرية د. سميرة موسى

جيلنا لم يحصل أبداً على الفرصة المناسبة ليلتقي بهؤلاء العلماء الذين كانت أفكارهم وأقدارهم متجهة نحو تغيير حياتنا للأفضل كمصريين. لسبب ما، وصلتنا فقط فرصة للعيش والنضوج مع أولئ الذين جعلونا نكره هويتنا المصرية، وأصبح شاغلهم الأكبر هو جعلنا نتتمسك بهوية آخرين، أقنعونا أنهم أفضل منا. أصبحنا نقلد من الثقافات الأخرى ما أنسانا نشأتنا وأفقدنا هويتنا المصرية الأقدم ذات الأصل.

أقول ما أقوله هذا بعد أن قرأت عن واحدة من أعظم العلماء المصريين، الدكتورة سميرة موسى. والتي، لنفس الأسباب القادمة من المتربصين بنا، أبدا لم تحصل على فرصة لا طالما كانت تحلم بها من أجل تغيير مصر ومواكبتها بالقطار العالمي في التقدم.

بعدما قرأت قصتها، حزنت على ما قفدناه، ولو كان هذا منذ دهر بعيد. وتخيلت ماذا سيكون حالنا لو رجعت د. سميرة موسى إلى بلدها، مصر، وبدأت في تنفيذ ما كانت تطمح اليه؟

أصبحت مصر الآن مجرد شعارات وأغاني، فأصبحنا في آخر عربة من قطار التقدم.. حقيقةً، لقد بركت عربتنا في مكانها منذ عقود.

أفيقوا أيها المصريون وإعلموا قدركم ومقدار عقولكم. من أستطاع أن يقدم شيئاً، الآن وقته

من الآن فصاعدا، مثلي الأعلى ليس أينشتاين أو غاندي أو لينون أو نيوتن، أحبهم حباً جما وتأثرت بقصصهم ومازلت أتعلم منهم ومن غيرهم كثيراً في حياتي، ولكن مثلي الأعلى الآن هي الدكتورة سميرة موسى. الفتاة المصرية البسيطة، المُصِرة، العازمة، الطموحة.

“

سميرة موسي (3 مارس 1917 - 15 أغسطس 1952 م) ولدت في قرية سنبو الكبرى – مركز زفتى بمحافظة الغربية وهي أول عالمة ذرة مصرية ولقبت باسم ميس كوري الشرق،وهي أول معيدة في كلية العلوم بجامعة فؤاد الأول، جامعة القاهرة حاليا.

تعلمت سميرة منذ الصغر القراءة والكتابة، وحفظت أجزاء من القرآن الكريم وكانت مولعة بقراءة الصحف وكانت تتمتع بذاكرة فوتوغرافية تؤهلها لحفظ الشيء بمجرد قراءته.

انتقل والدها مع ابنته إلى القاهرة من أجل تعليمها واشترى ببعض أمواله فندقا بحي الحسين حتى يستثمر أمواله في الحياة القاهرية. التحقت سميرة بمدرسة “قصر الشوق” الابتدائية ثم ب “مدرسة بنات الأشراف” الثانوية الخاصة والتي قامت على تأسيسها وإدارتها “نبوية موسى” الناشطة النسائية السياسية المعروفة.

حصدت سميرة الجوائز الأولى في جميع مراحل تعليمها، فقد كانت الأولى على شهادة التوجيهية عام 1935، ولم يكن فوز الفتيات بهذا المركز مألوفا في ذلك الوقت حيث لم يكن يسمح لهن بدخول امتحانات التوجيهية إلا من المنازل حتى تغير هذا القرار عام 1925 بإنشاء مدرسة الأميرة فايزة، أول مدرسة ثانوية للبنات في مصر.

كان لتفوقها المستمر أثر كبير على مدرستها حيث كانت الحكومة تقدم معونة مالية للمدرسة التي يخرج منها الأول، دفع ذلك ناظرة المدرسة نبوية موسى إلى شراء معمل خاص حينما سمعت يومًا أن سميرة تنوي الانتقال إلى مدرسة حكومية يتوفر بها معمل. يذكر عن نبوغها أنها قامت بإعادة صياغة كتاب الجبر الحكومي في السنة الأولى الثانوية، وطبعته على نفقة أبيها الخاصة، ووزعته بالمجان على زميلاتها عام 1933

اختارت سميرة موسى كلية العلوم بجامعة القاهرة، رغم أن مجموعها كان يؤهلها لدخول كلية الهندسة، حينما كانت أمنية أي فتاة في ذلك الوقت هي الالتحاق بكلية الآداب وهناك لفتت نظر أستاذها الدكتور مصطفى مشرفة، أول مصري يتولى عمادة كلية العلوم. تأثرت به تأثرا مباشرًا، ليس فقط من الناحية العلمية بل أيضا بالجوانب الاجتماعية في شخصيته.

حصلت سميرة موسى على بكالوريوس العلوم وكانت الأولى على دفعتها وعينت كمعيدة بكلية العلوم وذلك بفضل جهود د.مصطفى مشرفة الذي دافع عن تعيينها بشدة وتجاهل احتجاجات الأساتذة الأجانب (الإنجليز).

حصلت على شهادة الماجستير في موضوع التواصل الحراري للغازات وسافرت في بعثة إلى بريطانيا درست فيها الإشعاع النووي، حصلت على الدكتوراة في الأشعة السينية وتأثيرها على المواد المختلفة.

أنجزت الرسالة في سنتين وقضت السنة الثالثة في أبحاث متصلة وصلت من خلالها إلى معادلة هامة (لم تلق قبولاً في العالم الغربي آنذاك) تمكن من تفتيت المعادن الرخيصة مثل النحاس ومن ثم صناعة القنبلة الذرية من مواد قد تكون في متناول الجميع، ولكن لم تدون الكتب العلمية العربية الأبحاث التي توصلت إليها د. سميرة موسى.

كانت تأمل أن يكون لمصر والوطن العربي مكان وسط هذا التقدم العلمي الكبير، حيث كانت تؤمن بأن زيادة ملكية السلاح النووي يسهم في تحقيق السلام، فإن أي دولة تتبنى فكرة السلام لا بد وأن تتحدث من موقف قوة فقد عاصرت ويلات الحرب وتجارب القنبلة الذرية التي دكت هيروشيما وناجازاكي في عام 1945 ولفت انتباهها الاهتمام المبكر من إسرائيل بامتلاك أسلحة الدمار الشامل وسعيها للانفراد بالتسلح النووي في المنطقة.

قامت بتأسيس هيئة الطاقة الذرية بعد ثلاثة أشهر فقط من إعلان الدولة الإسرائيلية عام 1948.

حرصت على إيفاد البعثات للتخصص في علوم الذرة فكانت دعواتها المتكررة إلى أهمية التسلح النووي، ومجاراة هذا المد العلمي المتنامي.

نظمت مؤتمر الذرة من أجل السلام الذي استضافته كلية العلوم وشارك فيه عدد كبير من علماء العالم.

توصلت في إطار بحثها إلى معادلة لم تكن تلقى قبولاً عند العالم الغربي.

كانت تأمل أن تسخر الذرة لخير الإنسان وتقتحم مجال العلاج الطبي حيث كانت تقول: «أمنيتي أن يكون علاج السرطان بالذرة مثل الأسبرين». كما كانت عضوا في كثير من اللجان العلمية المتخصصة على رأسها “لجنة الطاقة والوقاية من القنبلة الذرية التي شكلتها وزارة الصحة المصرية.

هواياتها الشخصية:
كانت د. سميرة مولعة بالقراءة. وحرصت على تكوين مكتبة كبيرة متنوعة تم التبرع بها إلى المركز القومي للبحوث حيث الأدب والتاريخ وخاصة كتب السير الذاتية للشخصيات القيادية المتميزة. أجادت استخدام النوتة والموسيقى وفن العزف على العود، كما نمت موهبتها الأخرى في فن التصوير بتخصيص جزء من بيتها للتحميض والطبع وكانت تحب التريكو والحياكة وتقوم بتصميم وحياكة ملابسها بنفسها.

نشاطاتها الاجتماعية والإنسانية:
شاركت د. سميرة في جميع الأنشطة الحيوية حينما كانت طالبة بكلية العلوم انضمت إلى ثورة الطلاب في نوفمبر عام1932 والتي قامت احتجاجا على تصريحات اللورد البريطاني “صمويل”.شاركت في مشروع القرش لإقامة مصنع محلي للطرابيش وكان د. مصطفى مشرفة من المشرفين على هذا المشروع.
شاركت في جمعية الطلبة للثقافة العامة والتي هدفت إلى محو الأمية في الريف المصري.
جماعة النهضة الاجتماعية والتي هدفت إلى تجميع التبرعات؛ لمساعدة الأسر الفقيرة.
كما أنضمت أيضًا إلى جماعة إنقاذ الطفولة المشردة، وإنقاذ الأسر الفقيرة.

مؤلفاتها:
تأثرت د. سميرة بإسهامات المسلمين الأوائل كما تأثرت بأستاذها أيضا د.مصطفى مشرفة ولها مقالة عن الخوارزمي ودوره في إنشاء علوم الجبر. لها عدة مقالات أخرى من بينها مقالة مبسطة عن الطاقة الذرية أثرها وطرق الوقاية منها شرحت فيها ماهية الذرة من حيث تاريخها وبنائها، وتحدثت عن الانشطار النووي وآثاره المدمرة وخواص الأشعة وتأثيرها البيولوجي.

سافرت سميرة موسى إلى بريطانيا ثم إلى أمريكا لتدرس في جامعة “أوكردج” بولاية تنيسي الأمريكية ولم تنبهر ببريقها أو تنخدع بمغرياتها ففي خطاب إلى والدها قالت: “ليست هناك في أمريكا عادات وتقاليد كتلك التي نعرفها في مصر، يبدءون كل شيء ارتجاليا.. فالأمريكان خليط من مختلف الشعوب، كثيرون منهم جاءوا إلى هنا لا يحملون شيئاً على الإطلاق فكانت تصرفاتهم في الغالب كتصرف زائر غريب يسافر إلى بلد يعتقد أنه ليس هناك من سوف ينتقده لأنه غريب.

وفاتها..

استجابت الدكتورة سميرة إلى دعوة للسفر إلى أمريكا في عام 1952، أتيحت لها فرصة إجراء بحوث في معامل جامعة سان لويس بولاية ميسوري الأمريكية، تلقت عروضاً لكي تبقى في أمريكا لكنها رفضت وقبل عودتها بأيام استجابت لدعوة لزيارة معامل نووية في ضواحي كاليفورنيا في 15 أغسطس، وفي طريق كاليفورنيا الوعر المرتفع ظهرت سيارة نقل فجأة؛ لتصطدم بسيارتها بقوة وتلقي بها في وادي عميق، قفز سائق السيارة – زميلها الهندى في الجامعة الذي يقوم بالتحضير للدكتوراة والذي- اختفى إلى الأبد.

أوضحت التحريات أن السائق كان يحمل اسمًا مستعارا وأن إدارة المفاعل لم تبعث بأحد لاصطحابها كانت تقول لوالدها في رسائلها: «لو كان في مصر معمل مثل المعامل الموجودة هنا كنت أستطيع أن أعمل حاجات كثيرة». علق محمد الزيات مستشار مصر الثقافي في واشنطن وقتها أن كلمة (حاجات كثيرة) كانت تعني بها أن في قدرتها اختراع جهاز لتفتيت المعادن الرخيصة إلى ذرات عن طريق التوصيل الحراري للغازات ومن ثم تصنيع قنبلة ذرية رخيصة التكاليف.

في آخر رسالة لها كانت تقول: «لقد استطعت أن أزور المعامل الذرية في أمريكا وعندما أعود إلى مصر سأقدم لبلادي خدمات جليلة في هذا الميدان وسأستطيع أن أخدم قضية السلام»، حيث كانت تنوي إنشاء معمل خاص لها في منطقة الهرم بمحافظة الجيزة. لا زالت الصحف تتناول قصتها وملفها الذي لم يغلق، وإن كانت الدلائل تشير – طبقا للمراقبين – أن الموساد، المخابرات الإسرائيلية هي التي اغتالتها، جزاء لمحاولتها نقل العلم النووي إلى مصر والوطن العربي في تلك الفترة المبكرة.”

We never got the right opportunity to meet with those great Scientists, whom with their ideas; were heading towards changing our lives for the better as Egyptians. For some reason, we were destined a chance to live and grow with those who made us repel from our identity and all our heroic icons were made to seem vague to us, those whose biggest concern was in making our generation stick to foreign identities, that followed ours by long times, under the name of Globalization. They convinced us that they are better than us, so we had to do like them. We sadly became copycats of “their” cultures with a lost identity of our own.

I say that after reading the story of one of the greatest Egyptian Scientists; Dr. Samira Moussa. Who, for the same reason, never got the chance to make the dream she dreamed of doing for Egypt happen. The dream for the upcoming generations, us.

Having read her story, I was saddened to what we’ve lost, even if that was decades ago. I imagined what would have been our position now worldwide if Dr. Samira Moussa, and others, were given the chance to return back to their home country, Egypt, and start implementing what they aspired to…

Egypt is now a mere slogans and songs, we are standing in our place, while the whole world is moving forward.

From now on, my idol is not Einstein, Gandhi or Lennon or Newton, I still love and appreciate them, I still and will learn from them, I’m still influenced by their stories and others, but my idol now is Dr. Samira Moussa. The simple Egyptian girl, who is determined, and ambitious.

“Sameera Moussa (March 3, 1917-August 5, 1952) was an Egyptian nuclear scientist who held a doctorate inatomic radiation and worked to make the medical use of nuclear technology affordable to all. She organized the Atomic Energy for Peace Conference and sponsored a call for setting an international conference under the banner “Atom for Peace”.

Sameera Moussa was born in Egypt in Gharbia Governorate in 1917. Her mother went through a fierce battle against cancer. After her mother’s death, her father moved with his daughter Sameera to Cairo and invested his money in a small hotel in the El-Hussein region. At the insistence of her father, Sameera attended Kaser El-Shok Primary School, one of the oldest schools in Cairo. After she completed her primary education, she joined the Banat El-Ashraf School, which was built and managed by Nabawya Moussa, the famous political activist.

Despite the fact that Sameera got high grades in her Secondary education, she insisted on joining the Faculty of Sciences at Cairo University. In 1939, Sameera Moussa obtained a B.Sc. in radiology with First Class Honours after researching the effects of X-ray radiation on various materials. Dr. Moustafa Mousharafa, the first dean of the faculty, believed in his student enough to help her become a remarkable lecturer at the faculty. Afterwards, she became the first Assistant Professor at the same faculty and the first woman to hold a university post, being the first to obtain a Ph.D. degree in atomic radiation.

Sameera Moussa believed in “Atoms for Peace” and said “I’ll make nuclear treatment as available and as cheap as Aspirin”. She worked hard for this purpose and throughout her intensive research, she came up with a historic equation that would help break the atoms of cheap metals such as Copper, paving the way for a cheap nuclear bomb.

She organized the Atomic Energy for Peace Conference and sponsored a call for setting an international conference under the banner “Atom for Peace”, where many prominent scientists were invited. The conference made a number of recommendations for setting up a committee to protect against nuclear hazards, for which she strongly advocated. Sameera also volunteered to help treat cancer patients at various hospitals especially since her mother went through a fierce battle against this disease.

Sameera Moussa received a scholarship from the Fullbright Atomic Program in order to be acquainted with the modern research facilities at California University. In recognition of her pioneering nuclear research, she was given permission to visit the secret US atomic facilities. The visit raised vehement debate in the United States Academic and Scientific circles since Sameera was the first “alien” to have access to such facilities.

She turned down several offers that required her to live in the United States and to be granted the American citizenship saying “Egypt, my dear homeland, is waiting for me”.

On August 5th, 1952 after her first visit to America she intended to return home, but she was invited to a trip. On the way, the car rushed down from a height of 40 feet, which killed her immediately. The mystery of such an accident, since the invitation to California was shown to be untrue later on, besides the vanishing of the car driver who jumped from the car just before it rushed down, made some people believe it was a planned assassination, voices claim that the Israeli Mossad was behind Sameera’s murder by a Judeo-Egyptian actress, Raqya Ibrahim (Rachael Abraham).

In recognition to her efforts, she was granted many awards. Among them were:

• 1953, when she was honored by the Egyptian Army.
• 1981, when she was awarded the Order of Science and Arts, First Class, by then-President Anwar Sadat.”
